ABOUT:
Workshop participants will come away with a better understanding of: how the mind and body are connected and must both be engaged in healing from stress, life difficulties, and trauma; what practical yoga and mindfulness tools can be used to heal and deal with stress in one’s own life and when working with clients with traumatic histories; how to transform the energy of your class or clients; how yoga helps address issues faced by vulnerable populations such as at-risk youth; and more. The workshops are a combination of lecture and experiential learning, taught by Seattle leaders in the fields of Yoga Therapy, counseling and kinesiology.
The workshops are open to all and will be particularly helpful for people in healing professions such as social workers, counselors, etc.; yoga teachers; and those who wish to heal themselves.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:
Body Signals and Healing:
Body Signals and Healing introduces the meaning and value of body awareness to the healer and the healing. Tuning in to body signals opens the door to emotional awareness, and to the truth that underlies a physical response. Through lecture, discussion, and experiential exercises, participants will explore and deepen their body awareness and learn how to apply this awareness to individual healing and recovery. Participants will learn about the crucial relationship between the body and emotion, and explore the art of being fully present in their bodies as they witness and work with their own lives and the lives of their clients.
The body takes in an enormous amount of information through the five senses, far more than can be perceived with the conscious mind. Some of this unconscious information registers as observable signals in the body. This workshop helps participants to become mindful of these body signals, and to gain access to this healing information. Participants will leave with specific tools and handouts to help them continue to practice body awareness and to introduce these ideas to others.
Your body is talking to you. Body Signals and Healing will teach you to listen to it.
Get Unstuck! - Using the Phoenix Rising (Yoga Therapy) approach to Integrate your Body and your Life:
What does pain in your body resemble-a wicked witch, a lightning bolt? What does ease in your body resemble-the ocean waves, unchartered waters? Do you let your physical body connect you to what’s happening in your life emotionally and mentally? Our physical body works synergistically with our Mind and Emotions to connect us to What’s Happening Now in our life, the present moment. Lose that connection and the result can often be found in physical pain, anxiety and a sense of being stuck.
In this experiential session, you’ll learn the power of the Mind-Body connection and apply it by learning a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy technique for releasing stuck emotions from the body. You will practice how to invite in your emotions, whatever they are, by listening to your body. This powerful way of connecting your Mind and your Body can enhance the quality of your life and promote healing and personal growth. With practice you begin to understand that, “Your own experience is your own highest authority” -Karl Rogers
Harnessing the Energy in the Room:
When working with stressed and anxious populations, it's important to understand how to meet that energy, and like a skilled conductor of an orchestra, bring it into harmonic resonance. Through study and practice of fundamental principles founded in the yoga tradition, you will learn to shape and sift the energy in the room with less effort and more skill.
Yoga for Vulnerable Populations - A Social Justice Perspective:
Yoga has become mainstream in the last ten years and many people have benefited with physical, emotional or spiritual healing. There are many people in need, however, who aren't in the mainstream and don't generally have access to yoga, for whom it could be a light in the midst of darkness. We will explore how even just a small sample of yoga can help vulnerable individuals, such as those with mental illness, who are homeless, who struggle with addiction or who are at-risk for these or other extreme life challenges. One of yoga's essential messages is that we are all ok. When a person's life is full of turmoil and chaos, a moment of feeling okay is an incredible healing experience.
