Alternative Schools

This program currently offers homeless 3rd to 8th grade school children a diverse curriculum centered around yoga and mindfulness, but broad reaching enough to include nutrition, self-care, stress reduction, and hands-on wellness education. This innovative program addresses a number of key social determinants of health in the lives of homeless children.
The purpose of this program is multi-fold, and includes helping the children to: increase their personal health and wellness; develop skills and practices to better deal with stress; succeed better in school; and, strengthen family, school and community.
As we grow this work, the expanded ASWP plans to offer classes to the entire school community at CTS (Community Transitional School):

  • Weekly yoga classes for all students, teachers, and support staff
  • Monthly wellness workshops for students
  • Bi-monthly in service training for teachers and staff
  • Peer mentoring and student-led programs
  • Bi-annual family wellness and healthy eating workshops
